Topps chrome refractors packed a heckuva punch for Canseco collectors at the end of his career. His last at bat was 10/01, and his official retirement was 05/02.

Around the same time period, Topps released FOUR Canseco flagship refractors, all featuring him on different teams (Yankees, White Sox, Angels, Expos). (Is that some sort of a record???)
I love using these three pictured as they were literally right in the mix of this time period. They are beautiful together!

With Jose only having played 76 games in his last season (he was picked up late by the White Sox) he was on the pace to hit over 30 home runs and drive in over 100 RBIs, and 37 years old. He had more in the tank, but that was the last time Major League baseball saw of him as a player.

If I had a crystal ball in 1990, and saw a flash of this picture with this story, aside from being blinded by their beauty, my jaw would’ve dropped. How on earth could this player, who clearly will hit 800 homers, be out of baseball at 37, and have played for a thousand teams?

Nowadays, I’m thankful for him playing for all the teams he did, as it is fun as a collector. The left and right cards here are not super difficult to land, but the Expos black refractor is the big daddy. It rarely shows up.
