Top 100 Jose Canseco Baseball Cards – 2002 Fleer Platinum National Patch Time /150
I don’t think I’ve ever shared this card before, largely because it isn’t *crazy* rare. But as I recently discovered…just because it isn’t crazy rare, doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve notoriety. Let me explain …
2002 Fleer Platinum National Patch Time Jose Canseco
Hand numbered to 150 on the back, this patch is unique in that it was his ONLY patch card released during his MLB purgatory – that is, between the time Jose last swung a bat at the Major League level, and when he officially retired.
While I consider 2000 and 2001 UD Game Jersey patches to be his only patch cards released during his playing career (the only patch cards you could’ve pulled while watching him actually play – he last played in a Major League baseball game 10/6/01) this one was close. It was released (in 04/02) days after the Expos released Canseco (03/27/02), which was a few days before Opening Day.
For those keeping score at home, that means one could have opened a pack of Fleer, and pulled this card with the hope of seeing Jose play in the majors again.
Fun fact: The Expos ceased to exist a few years after releasing Jose. Coincidence? I think not.
