Top 100 Jose Canseco Baseball Cards – 2001 Donruss Elite Title Waves Holofoil /100
In 2001, Donruss created a beautiful run of cards unde the “Elite” name. Released in May of 2001, the set captures a particularly interesting time in Jose’s career. The base card shows Jose wearing an Angels jersey, though the Angels released him after only 39 at bats in Spring Training. The Title Waves subset, however, shows him as a member of the Athletics. The release date of 2001 Donruss Elite was during a time when Jose was playing for the Newark Bears, an Atlantic League team, where he played alongside his twin brother Ozzie.
The White Sox picked up Jose later on in the season, where he went on to hit 16 homes run in 256 at bats – a pace that would have put him at over 30 home runs and 100 rbi in a full season. It is also worth noting that the White Sox picked up Jose to replace Frank Thomas as their every day DH.
But back to the card this article is about: The Title Waves card no doubt features Jose as a member of the Athletics, because he wasn’t signed with a major league team at the time. Numbered to 1,991 (the year he hit a major league leading 44 home runs – tied with Cecil Fielder.) It is important to note that Jose played fewer games, and had far fewer at bats. As for this card, the first 100 only were given the holographic foil treatment. Donruss did not change the serial number – they were all numbered to /1991. A funky but fun little quirk.
