Top 100 Jose Canseco Baseball Cards – 1989 & 1990 UD 20th Anniversary Buybacks

I’m extremely selective when it comes to adding buybacks into my collection, but these have a great mix of nostalgia (the engine that runs buybacks,) the rarity, and an incredible story.  Let me explain …

In 2009, Upper Deck bought back cards from their ground breaking 1989 set, and stamped them with the 20th anniversary buyback foil stamp.  Jose has 3 cards in the set, and I’ve had the other two a few times.  I no longer have them, but do have the flagship as shown in the picture.  This may be the only copy I’ve ever seen … maaaaybe I’ve seen one more, but it is possible this is the only one.  What a treat – it is the perfect card.

Now, 2010 – there are, to my knowledge, about three of these that exist.  According to the story, they came to market from a yard sale find.  There was a set of 1990 Upper Deck, but when you opened the box, all of them had the same 20th anniversary stamp!  These were apparently set to be inserted in 2010 packs of Upper Deck, but they lost their license, and were unable to do so, thus making the 1990 Upper Deck 20th Buyback a card that isn’t even supposed to exist.
