If I had to pick THE most famous Jose Canseco baseball card, it’d be no surprise that I would say it is his rated rookie. Close behind? No doubt would be his 1987 Topps Rookie Cup.
His Rookie Cup card has been reprinted a billion ways from Sunday, and while I think it is cool to be able to get different versions of it, I found this incredibly interesting:
The number of times his most famous card was reprinted?
Once. And they did it when he was still playing, in 2001.
The card you see is my latest pickup. It comes in two flavors: a silver foil #/1986, and this holographic foil version #/86.
I didn’t think much of it when I first had it – I mean, c’mon … it is a reprint. They reprint cards all the time! But not this one apparently, and they don’t have the chance to reprint during his playing days, either.
Over the past year or two, whenever it would come up for auction, I’d always check to see if it was the #/1986 or the #/86 version, and it would ALWAYS be the #/1986.
After a while, I went from being a sideline watcher waiting to wanting one back. Here it is!
