I’m probably going to upset a lot of folks saying this, but … I don’t like Garbage Pail Kids. At all. I’ve always thought they were … well … gross. Some of the newer ones seem to not be as bad, but for me? They are a no-go.
Except for this one …
In 1988, Jose Canseco was at the top of the heap for baseball. Card companies were putting him in every set they possibly could…like this 1988 Topps Super Star sticker. Twice the fun with a player on both sides, but half (read: way less than half) the fanfare as the flagship cards. A mint copy of this card goes for *checks prices … wow! … the last one sold for $2, or about 10x what I thought it would.
This one clearly isn’t mint, but that is part of what makes it special.

Flipping it over on the back shows something rather odd. That’s right – it is a Garbage Pail Kid back! Apparently Topps was running tests. I had to search to see what character it is. Please don’t be gross please don’t be gross please don’t be gross ….

There he is … good ol Toilet Bo. A man eating toilet? I’ve seen worse! And – if you look closely, the piece I have has some of the toilet paper. So there you go … a GPK Toilet Paper back Jose Canseco.

This is apparently what the puzzle sticker back thingy looks like together. (Someone on one of the GPK groups had this up.) Hmmm … I wonder if this is in his bathroom? That’d be kinda fun.

Here’s a pic of what we have on the back of our bathroom door … a Mario ghost. I think it is called a Boo? IDK. Anyway, we made it for our oldest son’s birthday party maybe close to a decade ago … it is still up!

Anyway, back to the article. Recently, I was able to pick up this super cool piece – it is a Topps Vault item … the source photography used for the ’88 sticker itself! The white outline looks/feels like white out … like someone applied it by hand or something.

The back of the piece …

and here they are together!

While I still can’t say I’m a fan of Garbage Pail Kids cards, I am super happy to have this one – a 1988 Topps GBK x Jose Canseco crossover … and the source photography!
